Nektarios Galanis MD, PhD, Vascular Surgeon

Dr. med. Nektarios Galanis was born in Chalkida, Evia, in 1975. He consistently demonstrated academic excellence throughout his school years and pursued his medical studies at the University of Catania in Italy, graduating with distinction.

Immediately after graduation, Dr. Galanis moved to Germany, where he began his specialty training in General Surgery at one of the University of Heidelberg’s affiliated hospitals (SLK-Kliniken Heilbronn). Concurrently, he specialized in Emergency Medicine and was awarded the corresponding certification in 2006, following successful examinations (Notfallmedizin, Ärztekammer Baden-Württemberg, Germany). From 2006 to 2009, he served as an emergency physician (Notarzt) in Germany, leading over 500 emergency missions during that period.

From the outset of his medical education, Dr. med. Galanis maintained a strong focus on vascular surgery. Following the completion of his General Surgery specialization in 2009, he continued his training in Stuttgart, specializing exclusively in vascular and endovascular surgery at Marienhospital Stuttgart. In 2011, he was awarded the title of Specialist in Vascular Surgery, followed by the title of Specialist in Endovascular Surgery in 2015. From 2011 to 2016, Dr. med. Galanis served as Senior Physician (Curator) in the Department of Vascular Surgery at Marienhospital Stuttgart.

At the end of 2016 upon the invitation of Prof. Dr. Florian Dick, Dr. med, Galanis relocated to Saint Gallen, Switzerland, where he assumed leadership responsibilities at the Vascular Surgery Clinic of Kantonsspital St. Gallen. This center is internationally recognized for its expertise in vascular and endovascular surgery particularly in the management of complex aortic aneurysms, aortic dissection, peripheral artery disease and carotid artery disease.

Simultaneously, he served as the Director of the Vascular Surgery Clinic at Rorschach Hospital in Switzerland, where he implemented and established modern, minimally invasive techniques for the treatment of lower limb varicose veins as outpatient procedures. He holds the Swiss Endovenous Ablation Certificate for Varicose Veins (USGG) and is an accredited trainer of the Swiss Society of Ultrasound (ICAN-Section, SGUM).

The physician earned his PhD from the Medical School of Ulm University (Germany). He has taught General Surgery at the Nursing Schools of Heilbronn and Stuttgart, as well as Vascular Surgery to medical students at the University of Tübingen Medical School. From 2021 to 2024, he was a scientific associate at the Institute of Anatomy of the Medical School of Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, where he taught Anatomy to medical students. Since September 2024, he continues his academic teaching activities as a scientific associate at the Anatomy Laboratory  of Medical School of University of Athens. 

He has trained numerous specialist physicians in surgical and vascular surgery techniques at hospitals in both Germany and Switzerland. Since 2010, he has been a key faculty member at the Vascular International School—one of the largest and most internationally recognized institutions for vascular surgery and technical training. He has also participated as a trainer in medical education programs, including clinical courses in vascular surgery, contributing to the preparation of vascular surgery specialists for final board examinations in both Germany and Switzerland.

The vascular surgeon has performed more than 4,500 operations, both abroad and in Greece. Since 2020, after his repatriation, he has assumed the direction of the 1st Vascular Surgery Clinic of IASO Thessaly . Since October 2022 and for three consecutive years, he has served as director of the 5th Vascular Surgery Clinic at Metropolitan General, while since September 2025 he has been directing the Vascular Surgery Department at Lefkos Stavros – The Athens Clinic in Athens.

In addition to participating in numerous medical conferences, seminars, and workshops as both a trainee and speaker, Dr. Galanis continues to strengthen his international presence. He currently serves as an Associate Editor on the editorial board of the journal Vascular Specialist International and regularly performs peer reviews for renowned scientific journals such as the European Journal of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery and Gefässchirurgie.He also holds valid Good Clinical Practice (GCP) Certificates, a prerequisite for participation in large-scale clinical trials as an investigator. He has served as a Phase 3 Investigator in the clinical trials Voyager PAD and the European Carotid Surgery Trial (ECST-2).

Dr. Galanis is an active member of the following scientific societies: the Hellenic Society for Vascular and Endovascular Surgery (HSVS), the European Society for Vascular Surgery (ESVS), the German Society for Vascular Surgery and Medicine (DGG), the Swiss Society for Ultrasound in Medicine (SGUM), and the Vascular Access Society (VAS).

The physician is a Doctor of Medicine at the University of Ulm (Germany) and has taught the course of General Surgery at the Nursing Schools of Heilbron and Stuttgart and the lesson of vascular surgery to the students of the Medical School.

At the end of 2016 and at the invitation of Prof. Prof. Dr. F. Dick, he went to Saint Galen, Switzerland, where he assumed the duties of the vascular surgery clinic, which is a major vascular and intravascular surgery center with international recognition in the treatment of complex aortic aneurysms and aorticism. He also served as Director of the Vascular Surgery Clinic of Rorschach Hospital in Switzerland, where he applied and established modern -day -olds of the near -extremity varicose veins . He holds the Endovenous Ablation Certificate for Varicose Veins (USGG), as well as an accredited trainer of the Swiss ultrasound (ICAN-SEACTION, SGUM).

The physician has performed more than three and a half thousand operations and has trained a large number of specialist doctors in surgical and vascular surgery techniques, both in German and Swiss hospitals where he worked. For ten years, he is a key trainer in one of the largest and internationally recognized Vascular Surgery and Technical Teaching Schools, the Vascular International School. He also participated as a trainer in physician training programs, such as clinical courses in vascular surgery, as part of the preparation of specialized vascular surgeons for final specialty exams in both Germany and Switzerland. Since 2021 he is also an external scientific associate at the Anatomy Institute of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, where he teaches the anatomy lesson to medical students.
