Nektarios Galanis MD, PhD, Vascular Surgeon

Nektarios K. Galanis was born in Chalkida, Evia in 1975. During his school years, he was an excellent student in all grades. He studied Medicine at the University of Catania in Italy, from where he graduated with a grade of "excellent".

Immediately afterwards he went to Germany where he began his specialization in General Surgery at one of the Academic Hospitals of the University of Heidelberg (SLK-Kliniken Heilbronn). At the same time he specialized in Emergency Medicine and was awarded the corresponding title after successful examinations in 2006 (Notfallmedizin, Ärztekammer Baden-Württemberg, Germany). He was an Emergency Physician of the corresponding E.K.A.B. of Germany (Notarzt) and from 2006 to 2009 he led over 500 missions.

From the beginning of his medical education, Mr. Galanis placed particular emphasis on Vascular Surgery. Thus, after obtaining the title of Specialist in General Surgery in 2009, he moved to Stuttgart where he specialized exclusively in Vascular Surgery and Endovascular Surgery at the Marienhospital Stuttgart (Academic Hospital of the University of Tübingen). In 2011, he was awarded the title of Specialist in Vascular Surgery and in 2015, the title of Specialist in Endovascular Surgery. Mr. Galanis worked as Chief of Vascular Surgery at the Marienhospital Stuttgart from 2011 to 2016.

At the end of 2016 and following an invitation from Professor Prof. Dr. F. Dick, he moved to St. Gallen, Switzerland, where he assumed the duties of Deputy Director of the Vascular Surgery Clinic, which is a major center for Vascular and Endovascular Surgery with international recognition, especially in the treatment of complex aortic aneurysms and aortic dissection, peripheral occlusive arteriosclerosis and carotid disease.

He also served as Director of the Vascular Surgery Clinic of the Rorschach Hospital in Switzerland, where he implemented and established modern, almost bloodless techniques for the treatment of varicose veins of the lower extremities as day cases. He holds the Swiss Endovenous Ablation Certificate for Varicose Veins (USGG), as well as an accredited trainer of the Swiss Ultrasound Society (ICAN-Section, SGUM).

The doctor is a doctor of the Medical School of the University of Ulm (Germany). He has taught the course of General Surgery at the Nursing Schools of Heilbronn and Stuttgart, as well as the course of Vascular Surgery to students of the Medical School of the University of Tübingen. The doctor has been a scientific associate at the Institute of Anatomy of the Medical School of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki for three consecutive years since 2021, where he taught the course of Anatomy to medical students. Since September 2025, he has continued his academic and teaching activity at the same school, now holding the position of Assistant Professor of Medicine, University of Thessaloniki.
In addition, during the academic year 2024–2025, he served as a scientific associate at the Anatomy Laboratory of the Medical School of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens.

He has trained a large number of medical residents in surgical and vascular surgical techniques, both in German and Swiss hospitals where he worked. For ten years, he has been a keynote instructor at one of the largest and internationally recognized schools for teaching vascular surgical methods and techniques, the Vascular International School. He has also participated as an instructor in medical education programs, such as clinical courses in Vascular Surgery, in the context of preparing vascular surgical residents for the final specialty exams in both Germany and Switzerland.

The vascular surgeon has performed more than 4,500 operations, both abroad and in Greece. Since 2020, after his repatriation, he has assumed the direction of the 1st Vascular Surgery Clinic of IASO Thessaly. Since October 2022 and for three consecutive years, he has served as director of the 5th Vascular Surgery Clinic at Metropolitan General, while since September 2025 he has been directing the 2nd Vascular Surgery Clinic at Lefkos Stavros – The Athens Clinic in Athens.

In addition to participating in many medical conferences, seminars and workshops as a trainee or as a speaker, Mr. Galanis continues to strengthen his international presence today by being a member of the Editorial Board (Associate Editor) of the international journal Vascular Specialist International and by conducting reviews in international scientific journals (European Journal of Vascular Surgery, Gefässchirurgie). In addition, he holds Good Clinical Practice Certificates (GCP) which are a prerequisite for participation in large clinical studies as a researcher. He participated as a Phase 3 Investigatorin the Voyager PAD and European Carotid Surgery Trial ECST-2 clinical studies.

Mr. Galanis is a regular member of the following scientific societies: Hellenic Society of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery (HSVS), European Society of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery (ESVES), German Society of Vascular Surgery and Vascular Medicine (DGG), Swiss Society of Ultrasound (SGUM), International Society of Vascular Access for Hemodialysis (VAS).
